From the Back Cover

Professional VB 2005

As Microsoft′s most popular programming language in the world, Visual Basic allows applications to be written with dramatically less code. Programmers can simply drag and drop controls, such as buttons and dialog boxes, and then define their appearance and behavior. With VB 2005, this language has finally made the leap to becoming a true object–oriented language, and is now able to take advantage of everything the .NET Framework has to offer. This unparalleled author team combines their years of expert–level experience to provide you with the complete VB.NET developer resource. You′ll be equipped with everything you need to know to take your abilities to the next level when writing robust, useful applications.

What you will learn from this book

  • How to deal with the issues of security, data access, and the latest Visual Studio® 2005 IDE
  • Working with namespaces, networking protocols, and generics
  • How inheritance and interfaces can be used within Visual Basic®
  • Definitions of objects, classes, instances, encapsulation, abstraction, and polymorphism

3.0 out of 5 stars Wide range of topics but many gaps, 24 Jan 2006
By B. Eaton "twiglet27" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
For anyone that bought Wrox's "Professional VB.NET" (2002,2003), this is basically an updated edition. There are some additional chapters and also some that have been dropped, but if you've already got one of the previous editions then I would recommend that you buy Wrox's excellent "Professional ASP.NET 2.0" and look for another VB specific book.

As with the original, one of the strengths of this book is that it covers a wide range of topics including whole chapters on data types, the CLR, and other things besides. It has some improvements - one of my original complaints about the previous editions was the lack of coverage of the Windows Form life cycle, something which is covered nicely here. In addition there's a whole appendix on how to use the command-line compiler (something I would really have appreciated back in the days when the IDE was beyond my price range), but the scant coverage of several topics and the lack of the 'With' keyword in the examples, makes me think that much of this book was rushed and most of the code was converted straight from C#.

My two major gripes are a complete absence of information on System.Transactions (despite there still being a whole chapter on Enterprise Services with COM+), and the virtually non-existent coverage of data binding in Windows Forms. Given the way that Microsoft has decided to 'encourage' us not to bind to dataset schemas, a chapter on data binding (which was present in the previous editions, if a little lacking) would have been useful. To be honest the book would have been much better if chapters on these topics had been included in lieu of the ASP.NET chapters. ASP.NET is a topic all of its own and I think most readers would have been quite happy to buy a separate book.

To be fair I must commend the chapters on threading, network programming, and remoting; topics which seem to get little attention in the VB world. To its credit the book does a very good job of covering a wide landscape. However, the fact that I'd already bought the ASP.NET book probably didn't help, but I haven't really learnt much from this at all. If you've never used VB.NET before but have some programming experience then this is a very good place to start, but seasoned .NET developers will probably be expecting more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book!, 30 May 2006
By Raoul Millais (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I bought this book hoping to hoping to further my skills in VB.Net, I have to say I am thoroughly disappointed... The book is muddled in its presentation, and inconsistent. Furthermore there are a plethora of errors. I spent the best part of 2 days trying to get the final chapter tutorials to work and couldnt... even the updated source code on the wrox site throws runtime errors! This is the first wrox book i have purchased, it certainly doesn't make me want to buy any more. I think I shall stick to the MS Press books from now on.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good .NET sections, 21 Nov 2008
By Mehrdad Nourshargh (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

This book is intended to be a VB.NET book but for me it covers much too many subject areas and hence doesn't have any focus to it. Having said that I thought the sections covering .NET are actually very good and better than many other books I've seen.
