4.0 out of 5 stars Good book for the beginner/mediore programmers, 22 May 2006
By W. Dalmijn - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Its a very good book for a programmer that wants to get started in Visual c++ 2005. It is aimed at beginner programmers, but personally I think this book might be a bit daunting for a newbie programmer. The writer has a habbit to assume that the main crowd will be semi experienced programmers.

This means that he sometimes think a short explanation suffices and that the examples speak for themselves. This ofcourse is not a bad thing, because it means the reader needs to understand the code, and also why he wrote it like this. This is a vital good/bad thing of the book, so people who prefer long well written explanations on specific things of programming do not buy this book, if you like short and to the point explanations this book is excellent.

Another weakness this book has is that it has a lot of topics to cover, and one mistake was to put C++ and C++/CLI together in chapters, meaning you might start reading C++ code on one page and on the next page C++/CLI code meaning it might get confusing. That and some topics he does cover, like the Windows API programming language its very short. Other then that its a very well written book, and can be considerd a good foundation for your future programming projects.

I give this book 4 stars because its basically a very broad book, good written. But has an occasional burp when you try to find specific parts of code and sections cause of the code sometimes overlapping. I think a second edition would solve these quirks though since this book probably was released really quickly as Visual2005 was released in november meaning they only had 2-3 months to get the book ready for print .

For the newbie programmers:

If your keen and a fast learner buy this book

For the mediore programmers:

Get it :)

1.0 out of 5 stars Ivor Horton's Deceit, 20 Jan 2009
By D. V. Short "Enzo Short" (Orkney, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It would be dishonest to sell this book over the internet without warning the prospective C++ aspirant that one would need at minimum the use of Visual Studio 2005 Standard edition, not the C++ Express edition, with this book.
For this deceit by the author I give it only 1 star, because the book is useless to me without my being able to afford to buy the needed software.
