What is this book about?

PHP, Apache, and MySQL are the three key open source technologies that form the basis for most active Web servers. This book takes you step–by–step through understanding each — using it and combining it with the other two on both Linux and Windows servers.

This book guides you through creating your own sites using the open source AMP model. You discover how to install PHP, Apache, and MySQL. Then you create PHP Web pages, including database management and security. Finally, you discover how to integrate your work with e–commerce and other technologies. By building different types of Web sites, you progress from setting up simple database tables to tapping the full potential of PHP, Apache, and MySQL.

When you’re finished, you will be able to create well–designed, dynamic Web sites using open source tools.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great step-by-step project based guide....., 24 Mar 2004
By A Customer
As someone who has always found the Wrox 'beginning' series to be a great set of books in terms of content, style and structure , I'm pleased to say this latest title is no different.
Taking very much a project based approach the book takes the user through the process of building a number of sites, including a movie review site and comic-book site to teach the basics, and later some thoroughly enjoyable and useful projects such as a content management system, email subscription lists, e-commerce sites and much more.
Beginning with complete installation instructions for both Windows and Linux platforms the book is bang up to date with the latest releases and detailed appendicies including trouble-shooting and detailed installation instructions, along with technical references and much more. Coming in at exactly 700 pages the book is a superb step-by-step guide that will hold a users hand through learning the three integrated 'AMP' technologies (all of which are completely free open-source products) and will give a real sense of achievement as you complete each individual site.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to begin any sort of web development and after progressing though this excellent book, static web sites will be a thing of the past!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Guide, 4 Sep 2004
This book is a great start in the world of AMP. However I feel that although it goes into PHP and mySQL in depth it is short of content on the apache side of things.

If you are seriously thinking about learning these three subject this is a great first stepping stone. I feel that it would be more beneficial to buy a book on Apache aswell.

Dispite that this the book is clear and easy to read although some of the formatting of the code is not 100% correct and could prove a bit confusing in some cases. But it does the job and leaves the reader in a great position to go on and study further.

Well worth the money in my opinion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for sample apps, learning php not so good, 22 April 2004
By A Customer
I struggled just getting started with running stuff, but blamed myselfrather than the book. Then I got confused with inadequate explanation ofarrays. I had to go buy a specific php book (Lerdorf's) to learn the phpsyntax. My conclusion is that as an introduction to programming php(+MySQL) it is not for me. However it does have several ready-made codedapplications that may be useful, although most people would only ever needone of them. I've looked at Welling and Thomson's book and it seems morelike what I thought I was getting.
