What is this book about?

This comprehensive compendium provides a broad and thorough investigation of all aspects of programming with ASP.NET. Entirely revised and updated for the 1.0 Release of .NET, this book will give you the information you need to master ASP.NET and build dynamic, successful, enterprise Web applications.

What does this book cover?

Here are just a few of the topics covered in this book:

  • What ASP.NET is, and how it makes building applications even easier
  • How easy it is to work with ASP.NET pages and server–side controls
  • Accessing data of all kinds in your ASP.NET pages
  • An introduction to ADO.NET
  • Getting started with ASP.NET and the .NET Framework
  • Creating ASP.NET pages, working with server controls, and data management
  • Developing, securing, and configuring web applications

  • Debugging, performance, migration, and interoperability
  • Integrating this knowledge in real world development contexts

Who is this book for?

This book is aimed at experienced ASP developers working at the leading edge — rather than the casual ASP developer or beginner. We do not cover the basics of COM, ASP, or the .NET programming languages. This book is also ideal for Visual Basic developers who want to move into Web application design.

What do you need to use this book?

Here′s what you need to know in order to use this book:

  • A solid understanding of ASP
  • Familiarity with VB or C–based syntax (C++, Java(TM), or C#)
  • A desire to develop sophisticated ASP.NET applications using the .NET Framework
  • A desire for a comprehensive and in–depth guide to this exciting new technology

From the Publisher

This book is aimed at experienced ASP developers who are working at the leading edge, rather than the casual ASP developer or beginner. For example, we do not cover the basics of COM, ASP, or the programming languages we use in this book.

You don't need to be experienced with ASP to make the most of this book although being relatively comfortable with ASP concepts with certainly help. This book is also ideal for Visual Basic developers who want to make the move into Web application design. You should also understand the general principles of the use of components, and have knowledge of Visual Basic (or VBScript). Some of the samples are written in other languages, such JScript and C#, but you don't need to be fluent in these languages to be able to use this book. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good reference but not a tutorial, 14 May 2002
I bought this book to get into the guts of .net having read much of the overview material available. It certainly goes into great depth, but I was a little disappointed with the "real programmers use notepad" approach.
Having coded in every thing from FORTRAN and C++ to ASP and VB over the last 20 years I'm no stranger to text editor and 3 pass compiler scenario but I felt that, given the excellent Visual Studio environment, the majority of developers would be using the IDE for serious development.
Having said that the range of material covered is expansive and I'm sure I will keep refering to the book, however I am still looking for a book that covers ASP/ADO and Visual Studio wit hreference to .Net

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very practical, 22 April 2003
By A Customer
I was looking for a book that would let me upgrade from ASP3 to ASP.NET. This book *describes* ASP.NET, but it doesn't teach it. When I'm learning a subject I want lots of examples - monkey see, monkey do - so that I can just type it in and learn. Apart from a slender offering of case studies in the back, the examples are few and far between.

Buy "ASP.NET Unleashed" instead - it is very comprehensive, and has plenty of examples, each one teaching a simple principal.

To be fair, this Wrox book does cover the subject of what ASP.NET is and how it differs. But I can find that out from the web. Altogether, rather disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A complicated subject made easier by Wrox - well done, 23 Mar 2002
The language takes some getting used to but I have found the book easy to use for reference and a good study guide. I have often bought Wrox books on web development but this has to be the best so far. A very comprehensive book with lots of code content and examples and well researched. I recommend this one to buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Another usless Wrox Book
I have known Wrox to produce good books but this is on par with the JavaScript book that I couldn't give away and ended up being recycled.

This book is very much the same. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but little focus on Visual Studio
A very good book, lots of detail. Slightly difficult to read (not suprising, it's a complex topic!)
Also, some more focus on writing apps with the visual studio would have been... Read more
