A Wealth of Detail, 24 Jun 2007
This compact volume is bursting at the seams with a wealth of colour photographs of some of the greatest cars in the world. The book consists of two parts, each of which has been previously published separately, but which together form a very good overview of this subject. (Note that the subtitle of the book is "the definitive guide to classic and contemporary cars from 1945 to the present day".)
The first part is a concise history of the classic car, looking at the evolution of the movement, technical developments, milestone models, leading engineers and the results of their work. Style is, of course, the prime conisideration in the perception of classic status, so this aspect too is widely covered. Finally in this part, there is a look at grand prix racing, rallying, working-car classics, film and TV cars, and the future.
Part two makes up the bulk of the book and comprises an A-Z of classics and dream cars. Manufacturers are listed in alphabetical order, and the history and specifications of their classic productions are described. The book ends with a look at dream cars, those often amazing prototypes that have shaped the design of the modern car.
As mentioned above, the strength of this volume is the wealth of photography - it's only a shame that it was not produced in A4 format. the book is equally strong on style and content.
No gripes? Well, yes, only one, and that is the weight attributed to sports models. Sure the Austin Mini appears as do the Citroen CX, the Renault Espace and the VW Golf, alongside the expected Jaguars, Mercedes, Chevrolets and Aston Martins, but the authors betray their true love with pages and pages of sports cars (mostly Italian). I would have preferred to have seen more of the workaday classics.

Definite Guide? I am not sure..., 22 Aug 2007
I was expecting the book to include reviews on all the car models, including changes of versions (MKs). Many cars/models where excluded. The book might include important models which affected the industry, but givinig it the title "World Encyclopedia" or "Definitive Guide" is a bit pretentious.
