This slim book, despite the modest price, is disappointing. There is very little text and little explanation for the different versions of this long serving light aircraft. The bulk of the photographic coverage is of modern civil Austers, taken at various shows and fly-ins, the locations of which, alas, are not always identified. These are mildly interesting, demonstrating the diversity of schemes and registrations but the colours have to be guessed at - or other sources consulted! There is no colour, all the images in the book being monochrome.The military coverage is sparse, especially of wartime use, with only a few photographs of "non-typical" types. There are no plans, although on page 25 may be found the cockpit schematic and instrument panel key for the AOP 6 and T7, presumably taken from the Pilot's Notes - although they are not credited as such.

There are a few errors too. 'AOP' is not "Army Observation Planes" but Air Observation Post. There is virtually nothing on the important work of the RAF Air OP Squadrons during and immediately after the war with their unusual mixed complement of Army (Royal Artillery) pilots and RAF ground crew.

At the price it is probably worth getting for serious Auster fans, especially those more interested in the civil scene, but as a reference for the military use of the Auster it unfortunately falls short in both text and photographic coverage.
