4.0 out of 5 stars Practical perspective of air-sea rescue, 28 Mar 2008
By Nigel Paterson (Alresford UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Air-Sea Rescue in World War Two: Story of the Royal Navy Rescue Motor Launches (Aviation) (Hardcover)
As its sub-title indicates, this is 'a first-hand account of the Royal Navy North Sea Rescue motor launches'. Those associated with its many stories, especially the rescued and their descendants, must have special reason to be grateful that Alan Rowe took the trouble to put these stories into a book. His book gives a vivid portrayal of the adventures and dangers of Royal Navy Air-Sea rescue. Unexpected chapters deal with his part in the legendary 1942 Malta Convoy, an aborted mission to bring the Danish Royal Family across the North Sea, and the end of the German E-boats. He supplies some interesting background research to the events he experienced.

The reader will not find much insight into the hopes and dreams of the shore staff who kept the Navy launches seaworthy, or what it was really like to be involved in 'Air Sea Rescue in World War Two' from an RAF yellow boat perspective. What is in this book is a memorable portrayal of a brave and skillful man, his closest associates and the sphere of World War Two operations he knew most about.
