5.0 out of 5 stars An escape to paradise?, 15 Jun 2004
By B&J "Julian" (Newport, USA) - See all my reviews
What a lovely surprising read. What appears on the surface to be just another "chick lit" in fact is a far deeper and more interesting exploration of our feelings, why we do things and all set against the most exquisite descriptions of the South of France; the landscape, the foods and the smells. I'm glad I ran out of things to read and picked up my girl-friend's book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping read!, 30 Jan 2004
By A Customer
I loved this book! I spend much of the year in France and so was keen to read a book set in that country, although was somewhat fearing it would be of the hilarious-antics-with-the-plumber kind.

I need not have worried. The story starts gently enough - Lia moves to France to write and finds herself on what was formerly a New Age type retreat. Her neighbours are all endearingly dotty, but it's when photojournalist Ben turns up that things really hot up. Sadly he's closely followed by his manipulative ex-girlfriend. Lia turns to the American businessman she's heard mixed things about, but has her doubts - is he too good to be true or her very worst nightmare?

In the end I just couldn't put it down. It's funny without being corny, sad without being sentimental, touching without making you cringe. Like I said, I loved it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it leads you to believe, 2 Aug 2004
By A Customer
I got this book on the basis of the reviews above and the synopsis on the site. However what a grave disappointment. Slow, indulgent in terms of verbosity of prose, the characters bland, two dimensional and predictable - you don't care about anyone in the book. There's much better out there. A long hard slog.
