4.0 out of 5 stars A near masterpiece, 28 July 2007
By H. Carlton "autobiogfreak" (London, Eng.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Eat Pray Love (Perfect Paperback)
The only aspect marring Elizabeth Gilbert's well-written book is her self-absorbtion, and after reading the book, I came to think that this is part of its point. You have to be self-absorbed to even dream of writing such a stripped naked account of your own psysche. Her humour (or wit) saves her from being impossible.
In fact, I think she has written a new kind of book....a mix of travel, self-help and autobiography.
Whatever you think of her as a person, you must agree that this woman is a writer.....in her bones and by vocation.....she knows how to hold a reader. She knows how to bring the people she describes to life - vividly- so that you feel you have met them.
In fact, you feel you have been on this journey with Liz Gilbert.....what higher recommendation?
I rarely go out and buy 3 copies of a book for my closest friends: I did this time!

2.0 out of 5 stars So-so book, self-absorbed author, 28 Mar 2010
By Jennifer Malsingh (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything (Paperback)
I picked up this book whilst travelling, because I kept hearing from people that it was "life-changing" and a must-read. The first section in Italy was engaging enough, though already one begins to tire of the authors self-absorption, but after that it was down hill. I know that this kind of book is bound to be rather self-centred, but I grew very tired of the author very quickly. Those who have already travelled and had life-changing experiences of their own will probably not be very excited by one woman ranting endlessly about her experiences. On top of that, it's hard to feel very much sympathy for someone who is privileged enough to be able to spend large amounts of time and money travelling around the world to get over a messy breakup.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, clever, facinating and a must for travellers, 26 Aug 2007
By Mia (London) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything (Paperback)
The title says it all - Liz Gilbert has the wonderful talent of making you feel like you are walking in her shoes. Her descriptions of the food in Italy made my mouth water. Unlike some other readers it was the early part about the divorce I could have skipped - I found all the rest of the book wonderful including India. I had no idea what a (genuine) Indian Ashram might be like before reading this and though I'm not particularly religious myself, I found it facinating. I also found it very refreshing that someone can write honestly and passionately about religious experiences without losing her common sense and sense of humour, or in any way try to tell the reader what they should believe.
