5.0 out of 5 stars captivating, 10 Nov 2002
The book captivates your imagination from the opening scene and takes you on colourful ride through the life of Ali Kingston whilst evoking perfect images of every single character and location.
The dual first person / author narrative does take a bit of getting used too but it does give you the strange affect of wishing you could talk to Ali Kingston yourself in a pantomime 'he's behind you' type way.
The main characters youngest son (aged 4 going on 44) provides all the humour and really does make you laugh out loud with his misplaced adult comments & observations.
The makings of the next Hugh Grant Romantic Comedy in here somewhere i'm sure.
Definetly going to read more from Carole Matthews.

4.0 out of 5 stars Took a while but once into it, couldn't put it down, 2 July 2002
By Laura Marcus (England, UK.) - See all my reviews
I didn't realise till the second chapter that this wasn't just a first-person story but one that changed viewpoints from chapter to chapter. That put me off at first but I perservered and i'm so glad i did. This is a lovely heart-warming tale and the kids are very well drawn too which I always like in a novel as it gives it more depth than just concentrating on the adults.

There was a twist i didn't see coming towards the end - like that too in a book - and the ending was far more moving than i expect in a lightweight romance. the characters stayed with me after i'd finished it which is probably the best recommendation i can make for it.

a lovely grown-up read which i hv no hesitation in suggesting others try too. i shall definitely look out for more by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, 7 May 2002
By A Customer
This is the first Carole Matthews' book I've read but it certainly won't be my last! I was hooked from the moment I began to read because I couldn't wait to see what happened next! The style of writing is rather unusual as it's written from both the first and third person's point of view. The main character, Ali, writes from her own point of view, whereas the other characters' perspectives are written as if by an onlooker. This story is both funny and heartwarming and the ending is all you would wish it to be and more! Read this - you definitely won't regret it!
