Product Description

Product Description

A pure-pigment medium, pastels have been used by painters for centuries for the powerful and evocative colour they can produce. Professional artist and experienced teacher Mark Leach uses pastel to translate beautiful landscapes into striking, minimalist paintings with simple form and strong blocks of colour, while still retaining a sense of location and place. His simple techniques demonstrate how to move away from realism and towards using abstract painting to express mood and feeling. The book includes: Introduction: beyond realism, balancing the emotional and physical; Composing and Developing Images: composing a non-realistic image, feeling and passion, light, form and texture, seeing colour, and the journey to abstraction; The Joy of Colour: understanding the colour wheel, colour moods, colour palettes and mixes; Subjects to Paint: still life, landscapes, figurative painting, and colour on water; The Art of Pastels: my studio, pastels, pure pigment, composition, sketching from life and landscape, painting from sketchbooks and photographs, light and tone, mediums and supports for pastels, and pastel painting techniques.

5.0 out of 5 stars Put a new dimension in your work, 14 Jan 2008
I enjoy working with pastels and have been turning out competent work, as an amateur, but without any zing. This book, through Mark Leach's explanations, has helped me to experiment and develop my style -and in the direction I wanted to go! This is not a book for a beginner, for example, Mark does not cover how to make marks or compose a picture. He concentrates on the use of colour and how to use it to best effect. The book is well illustrated to support his text. Members of my art class all 'oohed' and 'aahed' and we had discussion about how he created certain effects in his paintings it gave us lots of ideas. This is a book that has helped me make a step-change in my work - explore inside the book and see if you think it will help you too.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last, pastels for today's styles, 17 Jul 2008
By artybeetle (Somerset, UK) - See all my reviews
I bought this book a short while ago, being intrigued by the cover picture and also by the fact that this was by someone who was working contemporary images in an often overlooked medium. I had seen very few paintings of abstract or simplistic style worked in pastel and I have to say that I was very taken by the collection of images. It puts to death once and for all the notion that pastels are only any good for delicate kiddies' portraits and similar sugary subject-matter.
The book itself takes you into how Mark thinks about his work; where he gets his subject-matter from and how he translates it to create his own style. Producing a photographic likeness is out the door; this goes to the essence of each subject, paring away non-essential details to leave emotion, feeling, colour and texture. Certainly not a beginner's book, but a fresh challenge for anyone who loves pastel and is looking to break away from the production of realistic paintings. Although I work representationally also, I really enjoyed this book and am keen to develop new painting ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely satisfied customer, 2 Jul 2009
By Mary C. (East Grinstead) - See all my reviews
This is an inspirational book. It has completely altered my perception of pastel painting, and that he can produce work on a large scale It is so helpful to read how he was able to achieve the effects he did and although I am a beginner in pastels - I can't wait to get started on putting some of his techniques into practice.
