Product Description

Product Description

The Routemaster was more than just a bus. It was a symbol of all that was great about Britain and in particular about London, which it served faithfully for an unmatchable fifty years. Routemaster Omnibus combines three best-selling titles by Matthew Wharmby and Geoff Rixon, the latter the proud owner of RM254, one of the first Routemasters to be preserved. Routemaster Jubilee (ISBN 978 0 7110 2999 6) celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the type from its commissioning as a purpose-built trolleybus replacement, its five decades in service spanning the upheaval of reshaping, division and privatisation to leave a core of 600 surviving vehicles immortalised by the Routemaster 50 event in Finsbury Park. Routemaster Retrospective (ISBN 978 0 7110 3155 5) explores, route by route, the withdrawal of the type during the 1980s and 1990s, leading up to the grand finale of Routemaster Requiem (ISBN 978 0 7110 3145 6). This title covered the much-admired last days of the final twenty routes to use the Routemaster bus, beginning with the 15 on 29 August 2003 and culminating in the unforgettable scenes outside Brixton garage on the afternoon of 9 December 2005 when thousands came to see RM2217 complete the final scheduled journey on route 159. Routemaster Omnibus offers an expanded final chapter dealing with the two Heritage Routes based on the 9 and 15, whose ten allocated RMs are all that remains of not only the Routemaster family, but of the London Transport legacy of design excellence and economy that was renowned throughout the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Routemaster heaven, 23 Dec 2008
By P. Smith "docmav" (Ruislip, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Three books in one very reasonably priced volume and a wealth of beautiful images of the Routemasters. Neatly divided into sections with an explanatory few paragraphs per section and then a grand selection of photographs to portray what has been mentioned, this book is a must for all Routemaster enthusiasts. With over fifty years of service in London and the provinces how many can say that the Routemaster was the bus they grew up with. The last bus designed for London the Routemaster saw off it's replacements in the shape of the Daimler Fleetlines, the Titans, the Metrobuses, the Metropolitan MDs, the Olympians, and even to some extent the Merlins, Swifts and Leyland Nationals, and only the lobbyists of the accessability brigade finally brought to an end London's tradition of the hop on and off rear platformed bus and the Routemaster was the last of this design.

Thank goodness for the people who were able to buy and restore some of the fleet before the cutter's torch could destroy them, long may these wonderful vehicles survive.

As an enthusiast myself I have a large collection of photos of the Routemasters at work and, with all the various photographic books I have collected over the years one thought keeps coming to mind - would it be possible to create a book to feature every single one of the Routemasters and a potted history of each. A book to have a photograph of all 2760 London Routemasters individually and, of course the RMFs of Northern General, the FRM and others of the class, would be a true tribute to the buses we have grown to love over the fifty plus years they have trundled our roads. Some have had a busy life donning different liveries, being redesigned, sold abroad, privately restored, Showbuses, etc and yet there are also those of the class who had a comparatively mundane life but wouldn't it be wonderful to see them all in one book (or maybe a couple!) now that they are so rare and so missed?

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book!, 8 Feb 2010
By Stephen Reed (Christchurch, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
I was in London in 2007 and came across the Routemaster buses on a couple of routes including Tower Hill (I thought they had all been retired by then). Being somewhat of a bus enthusiast I went for a ride on one of these `real' buses then decided to look up on Amazon in late 2009 for any books that may be available about the Routemaster. Well I found this book and purchased it. In a word, the 'Routemaster Omnibus' book in incredible!! The book combines three bestselling titles and this makes for one fantastic book. The information is superb and the inclusion of high quality photos, mostly in colour is a real bonus. For anyone with an interest in buses, or for that matter the U.K., then you will really enjoy this book. My thanks to the books' authors (whom I have never met). You have given me hours of reading pleasure!!
