the greatest fantasy writer of all time, 10 Mar 2006
Within the cauldron of fantasy literature, there is Tolkien, Donaldson, Howard, Anderson, Pratchett (of old) and the new pretender Erikson. However before you are able to chose which of these you claim to be the best or leading light or original....you have to read Leiber's Lankamar series to truely, and I mean truely be able to judge who is the best. The novels are a series of short stories that build upon the adventures, as such it makes for a compact reading. In the adventures of Fafhrd the Barbarian and the Grey Mouser (his sword, whichever one he is using at the time is always called cat's claw)you will experience a bewildering array of drama, deep emotions, humour and dare I say realistic heroic fantasy. There are scenes of pure brilliance and of such fantastic delight I find it sad and almost ironic that many have not visted the wonderful land of Lankhmar. So if I have to give an opinion, it is buy, steal, borrow or magical (if you can)into your possession Swords and Deviltry and dont stop, dont look look behind, neither to the right or left, keep going until you finish with Swords of Lankhmar. Then you can laugh, cry or simply wonder why, how and when. Then go and tell your wife, girlfriend, partner, friend, dog, the postman, anyone that will listen, what they are missing out on...and once you have you will understand my sentiments, like me you will smile (in quiet content) when others rant about Hobbs, Jordan and others, and when they challenge you, they need but look you in the eye once (they will never do so again) and know they haven't been where you have and then to kill all resistance you whisper the dispelling words of power.....Lankhmar.
