Product Description

Review

‘The introduction and commentary reveal an author with a lively awareness of the importance of perceiving the play as a theatrical document, one which comes to life, which is completed only in performance.’ The Review of English Studies

Product Description

The Merchant of Venice has been performed more often than any other comedy by Shakespeare. Molly Mahood pays special attention to the expectations of the play’s first audience, and to our modern experience of seeing and hearing the play. In a substantial new addition to the Introduction, Charles Edelman focuses on the play’s sexual politics and recent scholarship devoted to the position of Jews in Shakespeare’s time. He surveys the international scope and diversity of theatrical interpretations of The Merchant in the 1980s and 1990s and their different ways of tackling the troubling figure of Shylock.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very useful combination of set text and study aid, 1 Feb 2004
A simple and clear guide through the play. Aimed predominantly at GCSE level with set exercises to aid understanding, this edition gives illustrative guidance to every theme present and yet also provides inspiration for personal thought and reflection. The end notes are superb, detailing the anti-semitism argument with information on stage productions past and present. The notations and glossary, which are detailed on every other page, are unobtrusive enough to only refer to if required. As a Literary Studies undergraduate, struggling with, and slightly disappointed by Shakespeare, I found this edition to contain the most motivating commentary and has proved particularly effective in my understanding of both text and theme.
