Product Description

Product Description

The concept of profiting from trading volatility is not new, but is known to only a few players in the derivatives industry. Buying and Selling Volatility is the first book to explain this trading strategy in detail without using complex mathematics. Offering a new approach to the subject of options, seen purely from a volatility viewpoint, the author uses illustrations to clearly explain the connection between volatility and options. He explains how investors can profit from the volatility, or lack of volatility, of an option price regardless of whether the market rises or falls. Useful to both novice investors and professional traders.

5.0 out of 5 stars To REALLY understand options buy this book., 15 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Buying and Selling Volatility (Hardcover)
Options are not easy things to master yet the more you know the more you will want to know as their possibilities open up. That was my experience firstly as a private punter, and now as a derivatives professional and MSc finance student. Kevins book does a great job in taking the interested reader from thinking of options purely in terms of equivalence to stock prices onto the higher and potentially more fruitful dimensions of the professionals.
This book is devoid of needlessly complex math yet it will get you thinking about options in more depth than a dozen other books.
Put it together with "Options Plain & Simple" by Jordan and "Option Volatility and Pricing" by Natenburg (all books written by traders not pure mathematicians) and you will develop a better understanding of the realties in option trading than from a dozen of the more elementary or mathsy/option pricing books.
Finally, the book comes with some excel based software tailored to real option trading, this is invaluable to assist the reader in bridging the all too frequent gap between textbook financial theory and practical application.
Invaluable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful, descriptive analysis of trading option vol, 31 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Buying and Selling Volatility (Hardcover)
Refreshing to read a book solely dedicated to trading option volatility, aimed at the private investor - opening the door to the otherwise closed world of the Professionals. This book would be of benefit to any individual investor who is tired of reading about the same-old directional and limited scenario option strategies that proliferate the majority of the private investor literature. Whilst the book succeeds in explaining clearly the simple long and short volatility trades, and their respective sensitivities, the format tends not to work so well for the more complex option portfolio. Similarly, the attached spreadsheet, when mastered is useful, but could benefit from a rethink. All in all a must read for those interested in expanding their knowledge & appreciation of options trading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Option pricing without the maths!, 14 Aug 2002

This review is from: Buying and Selling Volatility (Hardcover)
Kevin Connolly's 'Buying and Selling Volatility' is a great book to help you understand the basic principals of option pricing and the greeks. It is simple and easy to read without the need of complicated calculus. It should form an essential part of an operations team's library.
