1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid this book, 13 Jun 2007
By Tim (Wiltshire, UK) - See all my reviews
Much of the content of this book consists of screen shots. They have large expanses of black space and are all printed with a medium grey font colour in what appears to be 6pt type size. The only exception to this is the error messages (normally red on black in real life), which are printed in very dark grey, making them effectively illegible. Most screen shots which show error messages are therefore followed by text boxes repeating the error message; to me this indicates that the publisher knew about the severe legibility problem and chose to ignore it.

The text between the screen shots is both wordy and banal. This book claims to be for professionals, but is written for children. For instance: over 400 pages into the book there is a simple example of displaying the first five items in a list, followed by, "Of course you don't need to choose five objects, you can specify whatever number is relevant to your needs. I chose that number to make it easy to display the results of the preceding commands on the page. Nor do you have to select files according to alphabetical order. You could specify any criterion that is of interest to you." I really needed to be told that; I would never have guessed that the command was not limited to filtering five objects.

At least one tree needed to die for this book. It died in vain.
