Product Description

In the first of the new city titles Terry Deary reveals the foul and fierce history of Edinburgh. Featuring tales of the cursed castle and details of a whole host of historical horrors that happened on the High Street, Edinburgh comes complete with a fold-out map of the city's horrible highlights.

About the Author

In 1996 Terry was the best-selling British children's author with 5 of his books in the top ten best-sellers of the year (Waterstones Book Shop tables). In August 1997 he was still leading the way with thirteen titles in the top forty. (Bookseller listings). In 1999, The Daily Telegraph recorded that he outsold Enid Blyton by four to one and a Libraries survey made him the most-borrowed author of non-fiction in Britain - adult and children's books. Terry currently holds 8 out of the 10 slots for 'Most Borrowed Children's Non-Fiction' authors in the Public Lending Rights annual survey covering July 1998-June 1999. In November 1999 Books for Keeps magazine readers voted him "The outstanding children's non-fiction author of the 20th Century". In 2004 he continues to live up to this title with ever-increasing sales of the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Terry Deary presents Edinburgh's history in a child appealing way., 15 Nov 2006

From the rock settlement of the Bronze Age to the towering tenements of the 19th Century, the Scots have battled out with bullies and fought to keep control of their capital.
Read on for a whistle-stop tour of Edinburgh's foul and fierce history....Plot your path to the past with the frightful fold-out map of the city - climb up to the cursed castle for tales of reckless raids, hit the High Street for a whole host of historical horrors and visit HolyroodHouse, the home of kidnapped kings and mysterious murders.
History has never been so horrible!'

Written with the usual Terry Deary wit, this is a superb history book dedicated to Scotland`s Capital - Edinburgh.

96 packed pages, split over 13 main chapters:-

Evil Edinburgh timeline
The cruel castle
Awful Old Town
Woe for witches
Horrible High Street
Miserable Mercat Cross
Revolting riots
Creepy churches
Terrible truths
holy rood horrors
Cruel criminals
No smoke without fire
Scrutinize a Scot

with an introduction and an epilogue.

Also includes a `frightful fold-out map', from the front cover and a fold-out from the back cover, entitled:-
`The Horrible Highlights of Edinburgh' .

Written in various fonts with numerous and humorous black and white illustrations that are sure to draw the most reluctant eye!

This is a useful partner to have with 'Bloody Scotland', from the same author.
