4.0 out of 5 stars Crafty Children versus a Fire-bug, 13 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Maurice Gee's novels for young adults are always exciting, but "The Fire-Raiser" is one of his best. It is set in a small town in New Zealand during World War 1, when patriotic feelings were running high. Some people burn a teacher's piano because it was made in Germany, but this fire triggers off a series of arson attacks. A group of friends supect who is responsible, and learn a great deal about human nature before the mystery is solved. There are some very funny moments, such as the swimming lessons in the river, where the boys and girls have to use separate parts of the river. I also enjoyed the school's Special Patriotic Play, which is based on a real play, performed by local children in 1916. This is a good, thought-provoking novel, which invites discussion of such themes as prejudice, patriotism, terrorism and violence.
