This book captures the excitement a child feels upon losing a tooth whilst opening up a window onto the multicultural world that is New York. Peter Sis lets us share in Madlenka's joy as she goes from shop to shop telling the owners her piece of news. With each shop keeper comes a new world, and the author cleverly allows us an insight into the country from which the owner originates, and its culture. By using indigenous names, native greetings and pictures of food typical of that country, Sis creates a different country on each page. What's more, we are sometimes invited to find out how other cultures celebrate the loss of a tooth!
