5.0 out of 5 stars Garden Spells, 31 May 2009
By Clare "Bookaholic" (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This book is about 2 sisters - Claire and her younger sister Sydney. Claire lives in the big, ancient house that has been lived in by her family for generations with a very special apple tree which if you eat the apple revelas something very important in your life, and its not advised to eat it!

Claire takes ingredients from her gardening to make food that affects the eater, unfortunately this makes her seem quite odd to the locals. But, its not just Claire that seems rather strange. Enter Claire's aunt Evanelle who predicts peoples needs, they may not know at the time she gives them things why they would need it but, it soon becomes clear later.

And then there is Sydney, she left Bascom (where Claire lives) many years ago but, returns after leaving a very abusive boyfriend and brings with her her six year old daughter Bay and Bascom is the one place Sydney feels safe but, he comes looking for her only Sydney is known to him as a different name.

I loved this book it kinds of has a feel of Joanne Harris novels to this so if you love her books I think you will love this the characters are brilliant and with a nice storyline beautifully told with lots of magic and a touch of humour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical, 3 Aug 2007
By kehs (Hertfordshire, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Garden Spells (Hardcover)
This is about the Waverley family who are blessed with strange; one could say magical, gifts. Even their garden has an apple tree with mysterious properties and the ability to foretell the future if you take a bite of its fruit. Centred around two sisters who have been apart for a while, but are now learning to live together again, along with a 5-year-old girl who has gifts of her own. An enchanting read, filled with magic, love humour and sorrow.

4.0 out of 5 stars Garden Spells, 15 Aug 2007
By rubbah "rubbah" (Hertfordshire) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Garden Spells (Hardcover)
I loved how every family had a special characteristic, and Evanelle's gift in paticular. The book is centered around the Waverlys who have special gifts and a magical apple tree.
Though a slightly predictable end, this is an enjoyable read.

This is the book that introduced me to this author and her adult, whimsical fairy tale. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Completely different to what I normally read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delicious!
I thought this was a really delicious read, with hints of Joanne Harris' 'Chocolat'. So many delightful and magical characters.

A real feel-good story.
