One question I'm often asked about my books is whether the setting is real or not.

Here I get chance to follow in the characters footsteps from both Vampyrrhic and Vampyrrhic Rites and take in some of the sights such as Whitby Abbey and the house where Bram Stoker stayed on his visits to Whitby over a century ago. One of my favourite authors is Arthur Machen. On a visit to Whitby during World War 1 he described it as 'a town of a magic dream.' Do you agree? And what do you make of the little figurine I saw in the British Musuem that dates back six thousand years and appears to be wearing a pair of rather funky sunglasses? I bought this book after reading his sequel to the "Day of the Triffids" and enjoying it throughly. In the same way that the triffids made me scared of meteor showers, as I read this book on the London Tube a sense of relief overwhelmed me when we pulled into the well-lit stations, away from the dark tunnels.

This is the first horror book I have read, although I do have eclectic reading tastes, and once I got through the prologue (which I found heavy going) I was soon caught up in the well-drawn narrative.

David Leppington returns to the town of his birth, Leppington. His family has lived there for generations and he is curious - is the town named for the family or the family for the town? He soon discovers that his family's history is interatically linked to that of the town and that his own destiny is pre-ordained by their action a millenia ago.

As David, and other hotel guests, are caught up in the horrors of Leppington, you realise that Simon Clark's writing skills are similar to the hypnotic talents of the vampires. You find that even though you are scarying yourself, you are pulled to the next page, and then the next, then the next...

A great book, which has added this genre to those I pick up of the shelves - I have already ordered "The Fall" and "Judas Tree"

This was the first Simon Clark book I had read and it's enough to get any horror fan hooked. The thrills are non stop and the author isn't scared to push his writing to the limit. You may not like all the main characters but each one of them is vital to the story and make for a compelling read. Any fan of horror, in particular vampire stories will love 'Vampyrrhic'.

I warn you - you will not want to put this book down until it is finished!

Readers seem to have a love or hate reaction to Simon Clark's novels and this one certainly seems to have mixed reviews here.

I personally find his work has good pace and plot and thought Vampyrrhic was an interesting rework of the classic vampire genre with a twist.

I would agree with the opinion that his writing is probably not the best technically but after a slow start I found Vampyrrhic an entertaining if undemanding read.
