5.0 out of 5 stars my kind of time, 29 Dec 2005
I read the first book and loved it, even if the subjects were a bit far ranging. When I saw they had produced another book, I wondered if it would be a weaker version of the first. Having read "Give me Time", I can safely say that far from being a shadow of its predecessor, it is more informative, better researched, even easier to use and exceptional value.
Moreover, it touches on aspects of time that I had not realised were so vital in our constant quest to find more time in our lives. One example of this is the chapter on delegation which cleverly explains the difference between precision delegation (which is what most of us do) and capability delegation (which is what most of us should do more of); I have tried their techniques and they really do get other people happily to do your work for you.
Another treat is the chapter on happiness. A surprising thing to find in a book on time, at least it surprised me, but a revelation. The search for happiness affects all of us and this is the most interesting thing I've read on how to get it. No airy-fairy nonsense, just common sense translated from proper psychological research.
The opening chapter is called 'I don't have time to read this book'. A clever way to introduce a questionnaire that guides you to the chapters that you're most likely to find helpful. But, if you're anything like me, once you start you will want to read the whole thing.
If you buy one self-development book buy this one. Unlike most books in this genre, it delivers much, much more than the title suggests.

4.0 out of 5 stars Food for thought..., 25 Dec 2006
By Mark A. Cross "Jaideco" (New Zealand) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There seem to be two different types of people in this world.
On the one hand there are those who just seem to have ingenuity, creativity and presence and then there is everyone else.

Although this book wouldn't magically turn the latter into the former, what it does do quite effectively is provide ideas that you can pore over in your own time. When you need to persuade someone to your side of an arguement, when you need to find a way to relax, when you need to make an impression... This book introduces you to a broad range of options which help you find methods and techniques that you might have forgotten existed.

The writing style is easy to follow and broken down into short manageable chapters so it is easy to find your own pace. It also written by someone who clearly has a background in psychology (just look at the bibliography) because all of the advice is practical and considered, there are no attempts at offering the hollow inspiration that is so common in self-help books.

In conclusion, if you are asking whether this book change your life or motivate you to new levels of success; the answer is "Probably not...".
Alternatively if you are asking if it is simply a good read? If it will help you find new ideas about how to handle daily situations and possibly help you see how your skills fit into a team environment... You will find this to be a very handy book that you will almost certainly enjoy and might well find yourself revisiting in those moments when you just need some ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Improve yourself in this gym without breaking a sweat!, 27 Feb 2005
By C. M. Perkins (Stirling, Scotland.) - See all my reviews

This is the model for self-development books for the 21st Century. I have read many self-development books, to benefit personally and to support my work as a trainer and coach. Some have been based on academic research, others have been 'secret of my success' books. This one genuinely stands out.

There is a solid underpinning of well-researched psychology, combined with dozens of practical tools and examples. The Mind Gym have taken the best, most useful theories and presented them in easy to understand ways, illustrating them with real-world examples from many of the participants at their 'Workout' training sessions.

Some of the things this book can help you with:

Develop a more take-charge attitude
Stop procrastinating
Sort out where your life is going and make big decisions
Make a more positive impact on others
Become more influential
Get on better with others, have more gravitas and resolve conflicts
Change other people's attitudes without upsetting them
Break bad news in a sensitive way
Reduce your stress levels
Become a better creative thinker

It's full of interesting self-assessments and you get access to their website for even more useful tools. There's just the right combination of interaction, anecdotes and explanation; and it's structured as a book you can dip into and get ideas straight away for any particular life challenge you face.

All in all, a book that will make a difference - if you USE all the good stuff in it.

For some further reading, have a look at '(Inner) FITness and the FIT Corporation' by Ben Fletcher, also about 'mental fitness'.
