Product Description

Product Description

This poignant, haunting poem, originally written for the author's fiancee who died in a plane crash in 1943, was given to the SOE agent Violette Szabo as her code poem, before she was dropped into Occupied France in 1944. It afterwards became famous through the film of her life, 'Carve Her Name With Pride', starring Virginia McKenna, and has been a source of inspiration ever since to those who have lost a loved one or are themselves facing death. Now one of the best loved poems in the English language, 'The Life That I Have' is here presented as a special illustrated gift book, with pencil drawings by the artist Elena Gaussen Marks, the author's wife, who has used many scenes associated with his life to convey the symbolism of the words, Her pencil sketch of Violette Szabo, based on a photograph, is also included.

About the Author

Only in 1998, with the publication of Leo Marks' remarkable book about his work with SOE, 'Between Silk and Cyanide', did it become known that he was the author of this and many other poems used by SOE agents during World War II.

4.0 out of 5 stars A famous love poem in a pocket format, 13 July 2001
By A Customer
This book is an illustrated version of the poem written by Leo Marks and made famous in the film about the SOE agent Violette Szabo (Carve her Name with Pride). It's a moving poem that seems to touch most people. The drawings are simple but effective. This little volume - only a few pages - would make a nice little gift that would last much longer than a bunch of flowers! Leo Marks's book "Between Silk and Cyanide" gives the background to the story of the poem.

1.0 out of 5 stars a disappointment, 11 Sep 2009
By Hugh van der Mandele (Harlingen, Netherlands) - See all my reviews
the beatiful and very inspiring poem "the life that I have" by the cryptographic genius Leo Marks is illustrated, many many years later, by his much less, if not completely untalented wife. A waste of paper. Sorry.
