5.0 out of 5 stars A great biographer for the greatest of kings, 8 Nov 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Frederick the Great (Paperback)
Nancy Mitford said that of all the people of whom she had written the biography (M.me de Pompadour, the Sun King, Frederick the Great), the King of Prussia had been the most interesting and charming. She tells the story of Frederick the Great's life from his gloomy youth with a violent father, to the glorious days of the Seven Years' War until Frederick's old age, when he continued to be as active as ever. Mitford, with a witty style and deep understanding of human nature, points out all the many facets of Frederick's soul: his lasting love for flute music and French literature, his unshakeable sense of his duty towards the state, his much talked of homosexuality, his genius in the art of war which made him one of the most gifted commanders of all ages.

While reading Mitford's pages, you will find yourselves at the royal palace of Sans Souci near Potsdam seeing Frederick discussing philosophical matters with Voltaire, or on the foggy battlefields of Rossbach and Leuthen.

The story of a real man as beautiful as a perfect novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well rounded picture of Fredrick the Great, 29 Aug 2008
By bernie "xyzzy" (Arlington, Texas) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
I am a picture person and this book is jam packed with many color plates depicting various aspects of Freddie and his environment. One plat shows a map of Frederick's battles. For collectors there is a picture of a gilded snuff-box set with diamonds with a miniature of the King. To know some one you must know their background and environment.

Then when you read about their actions you get a feel for the reasons behind these actions. What was going on the world around Freddy that help mold him?

In this book Nancy Mitford takes the blur of many wars and focuses them through the eyes of a single great leader. Nancy Mitford has a good track record as a history writer of this era. You may want to read more of her books for a fuller background.

This book is divided into twenty to chapters usually separated by wars, a section on resources, and an extensive index.
