5.0 out of 5 stars A very good starting point, 18 Jul 2006
By A. Thomson "adaminspace" (Shoreham-by-Sea, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this book to learn more about using software synthesisers with Cakewalk, as a recent convert to home-studio recording.

It provides a very good introduction to sound wave theory from the ground-up, beginning with a basic definition of sound and a definition of synthesis. It then covers (in some detail) the history of sound synthesis from its earliest beginnings, through to modern techniques. This gives a great grounding in the subject. It's very readable, and has lots of good simple diagrams to illustrate concepts. It introduces all the terminology and methods used at a good pace. It can seem like a lot to get through before you actually get to any real 'hands-on' knowledge, but it's well worth the effort - It has improved my understanding of sound and digital recording enormously. Things like wave-shapes, harmonics, filters, LFOs, basic electronics, sample rates, are examples of areas that I now have a really good grasp of. Just reading the first two chapters 'Background' and 'Techniques' will provide a good overall understanding of the main concepts of synths.

This book should be of great value to anyone who wants to understand how a synthesiser works, and how best to get the sounds you want out of it. In addition it provides a wealth of information about general concepts of sound and harmony, all of which can only be of value to anyone interested in music and recording.

Heartily recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Covers pretty much everything without going _too_ deep., 27 Feb 2001
This tome consists of the following major sections: What is synthesis / why / where and how (a brief history, also), Analogue Synthesis (Additive, Subtractive etc...), Hybrid Synthesis, Sampling, Digital Synthesis, Using Synthesisers and Controlling via MIDI.

Very briefly, I've found this to be a concise read that isn't difficult at all (as long as you already have a very general idea of what audio-synthesis is). It goes far enough in each of its subjects without bogging the reader down with too much jargon, and imho is a very good starting point for studying this particular subject.

In fact, I would recommend any of the books in this excellent series. Good for the 21st century musician/engineer! :)
