Product Description

Product Description

The issue of ideal types, or saints, in Buddhism is a difficult and complicated problem in Buddhology. In this magisterial work, Reginald Ray offers the first comprehensive examination of the figure of the Buddhist saint in a wide range of Indian Buddhist sources.

First Sentence
The relative lack of scholarly attention given to the Buddhist saints cannot be explained by an absence of data, for these figures are many and are documented throughout Indian Buddhist history. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars A very important academic work on Buddhist history., 13 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Buddhist Saints in India: A Study in Buddhist Values and Orientations (Paperback)
Reginald Ray has written a book that has fundamentally changed the way ancient Buddhism and ancient Buddhists are viewed. Much orally transmitted Buddhist history has been the work of monastic monks, and this has led to a bias .A bias against the the "forest dwellers", the meditating ascetics , heroic saintly figures really trying to lead the wandering life the Buddha once led. In a nutshell Ray proposes a move away from seeing the Buddhist community as a two fold;monk/laity model , seeing it as a three fold community including the forest dwelling meditators. These Buddhist Saints are really the powerhouse of spiritual energy that have kept the Buddhist tradition alive until today. A very deeply reasearched and painstakingly cross-referenced book of the highest academic standard. Especially useful for Buddhists interested in the Pali Cannon and the Therevada school, but deeply interesting to any sincerely practicing Buddhist.

3.0 out of 5 stars Buddhist Saints in India, 17 Feb 2010

This review is from: Buddhist Saints in India: A Study in Buddhist Values and Orientations (Paperback)
The book is useful, but not entirely what I wanted. I would have liked more detailed information on the arhants, but the book only gives their names and then a paradigm of what they where like. I also found that you have to know a lot more about Buddhism to really understand the content of the book. The writing style is a bit old fashioned and very academic, it would be nice to have something with a more casual and easy-to-read style. However, it does have some of the basic information that I need.
