I am reviewing the cassette for the old edition of Headway Upper-Intermediate. There is a newer edition available, and I can't comment on the quality of that.

The problem with this listening material is that the variety of accents is limited to generic British and generic American. The exercises are fairly dull, and often worth just leaving out all together (Camp Grenada for example - what can usefully be learnt from that? It isn't even funny, despite being a "comedy" song) and the useful language sections at the end of each chapter, well, they really aren't that useful. When I used the Headway Upper-Intermediate and Intermediate books in the classroom, I was really using them for the bare bones of the lesson, and supplementing as much as possible. With many other EFL books, I use the material in the book for most of the lesson, and just do a couple of extra exercises, which is how it should be if a student has splashed out on a textbook.

I thought the Headway series could not be improved upon - well it has been!
To be truthful the old series was getting tired - but new readings, listenings, and up-to-date material breath new life into this reliable course. Now more essential than ever!

I've been teaching on and off for 12 years across most of Asia and I've got nothing bad to say about these books. There are some teachers who feel that this set of books is out of date and somewhat irrelevant when teaching in Asia. I couldn't disagree more. `A bad workman blames his tools'. If you're a contentious and focussed educator, it really doesn't matter whether you're teaching something relevant to yesterday or ten years ago. These books are invaluable in teaching and practicing the 4 skills as well as grammar, pronunciation etc and are organised in a progressive and informative way. Well done Headway.
