5.0 out of 5 stars Synchronicity in action, 28 Dec 2008

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
The main part of this book consists of an extended essay detailing the events which led up to the publication of Lodge's novel about Henry James entitled 'Author, Author'. Why did at least 3 authors separately decide to write novels featuring the great man at the same time? Lodge describes his own feelings on discovering that at least 2 authors had beaten him and published novels featuring James whilst his own was still being written; and how he felt when one of his rivals was listed for the Man Booker prize. This is a fascinating study of strange literary coincidences.

The rest of the book contains essays on the genesis and first critical reception of several other novels including H G Wells' Kipps and Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose. I found these just as interesting as the main essay. David Lodge's writing is as ever crisp and clear and a joy to read.
