Amazon.co.uk Review

Will Napoleon Bonaparte form an alliance with the Malay princes of the South China Sea? Not if Jack Aubrey can help it. Conveying a diplomatic mission to the Sultan's court, Aubrey and company must also contend with orangutans, typhoons, and a squadron of wily French envoys. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Review

'... full of the energy that comes from a writer having struck a vein... Patrick O'Brian is unquestionably the Homer of the Napoleonic wars.' James Hamilton- Paterson 'You are in for the treat of your lives. Thank God for Patrick O'Brian: his genius illuminates the literature of the English language, and lightens the lives of those who read him.' Kevin Myers, Irish Times 'The century's finest sea stories' Daily Mail 'As entertaining as its predecessors. O'Brian is a master of the narrative of action, but he has sustained interest through this long sequence of novels by expanding the genre to which they belong so that it can include much else besides.' Peter Campbell, London Review of Books

First Sentence
In spite of the hurry, many wives and many sweethearts had come to see the ship off, and those members of her company who were not taken up with sailing her on her difficult course close-hauled to the brisk south-east breeze, watched the white flutter of their handkerchiefs far across the water until Black Point hid them entirely, shut them right out. Read the first page

4.0 out of 5 stars Thirteenth in the series, not quite the best., 7 May 2001
By A Customer
As the series continues (this is the 13th of 18 books) the time period which each book covers reduces, which has the effect of slowing down the action. More of the book is devoted to the interplay of personalities and less with the description of naval engagements. Also, there is an amount of quotation of contemporary poetry and sea shanty, which whilst no doubt authentic does sometimes appear like padding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Patrick O'brian, 27 Nov 2009
This much admired book is one of a series of ten ,all written with great attention to history without being history books as such . My reccomendation is that one should first read book one and then go on to the rest .
Personally I am now half way through my third reading of the series and plan when I come to the end to start again .
If you have the slightest interest in the Navy in Nelson's time you will thoroughly enjoy these scholarly but immensely entertaining books .
It is sad that Mr Obrian only became famous towards the end of his life which is now sadly over .
For those who have no interest in history ,naval or otherwise I still reccomend these tales if only for the beauty of the language .
Once you start on book one "Master and Commander " you will be hooked ,I guarantee .
I wish you enjoyable reading .
