A Sparkly Romantic Drama - For Fans of About Last Night and St. Elmo's Fire..
on 7 July 2015
If you enjoy movies like About Last Night (Rob Lowe and James Belushi), and St. Elmo's Fire, you might well like this flick.
Jason (played by Zac Efron), Daniel and Mikey are three twenty-something pals living in New York. Jason and Daniel are work colleagues in an advertising agency, whilst Mikey is a doctor. Jason is newly single after his girlfriend Christie unceremoniously dumps him, Mikey's wife Vera is cheating on him with a lawyer and wants a divorce, and Daniel has a fledgling "friends with benefits" relationship with Chelsea.
As the three guys lick their wounds from failed and failing relationships, they start hitting the local nightspots in search of new paramours. Jason soon hooks up for a one night stand with the cynical, feisty, sharp-tongued and sexy Ellie, a twenty-something NY girl with attitude. Soon afterwards, the three unlucky in love fellows make a pact to stay single, but it gets complicated when Jason finds himself irresistibly drawn into an affair with sparky Ellie...
This film reminded me quite a lot of the eighties classic, About Last Night. Jason is the affable, good-looking chap that the girls can't resist, reminiscent of Rob Lowe's character in the aforementioned movie. Daniel is the joker in the pack, an irreverent, cheeky chappy, who's just like James Belushi's character in About Last Night, indeed with his looks he could even be mistaken for a Belushi brother. The film is very stylish and the lead characters are likeable, but the plot does wander a bit aimlessly at times. The sequence involving a sex toy at a posh dinner party is very cool.
Overall, the movie has the vibe of a male version of Sex And The City, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Although it's highly engaging and entertaining, worthy of 4 stars, it never quite reaches the heights of the very best date movies like About Last Night and St. Elmo's Fire. However, it is on a par with similar top notch date movies like 500 Days Of Summer. Additionally, the out-takes right at the end of the movie are very funny.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this review.
