Actually a really enjoyable film with lots of names. Followed the well-trodden path of British 1950s films of telling a number of stories with a story (e.g. "Train of Events"). Some lovely cameos, especially Sid James, the boxer who had never won a fight, though the wonderful Joan Hickson as his wife takes a bit of believing - but fun

This late fifties production is a disappointment considering the top notch cast. The story of a group of film extras is just boring with the boxing scene the only bright moment. A definite no no.

William Fairchild had just had a big hit with JOHN & JULIE in which British Lion had invested, and could do no wrong as its success acted as the springboard to David Kingsley (joined later by Launder, Gilliat and the Boultings) getting the British Lion organisation back in the black after Sir Alexander Korda's golden cinematic era (1945-55), which had expended a £3M Government loan on high-quality international films (including THE THIRD MAN and GONE TO EARTH), all of which could not be popular enough to make the financial returns required. His scenario here for THE EXTRA DAY opened up many possibilities for the 'million dollar cast' British Lion would later achieve (or promote) with JETSTORM (1958).

I was privileged to know this picture's producer, E.M.Smedley-Aston, who gave me many inside stories on this and his other British Lion hits (bar two misses) into the seventies: he was honest when he said that the film did not get the audiences it aimed for at cinemas, and that it did not repeat the expected JOHN & JULIE success. But for now - try and seek-out some of the hopeful faces making their screen debuts in the crowds - Glenda Jackson and Beryl Reid among them . . .

This movie is a real novelty - punctuation among the formula films of the period - and as easy-going and full of famous faces as JOHN & JULIE, together with an increased budget. The sole reason for its performance at the box office was arrived at when the film failed to get the golden trumpet of Eddie Calvert to create the soundtrack.

Tracking down the five missing agents who go missing, has extras, this film as a very good stars: Richard Basehart, Simone Simon, George Baker, Sid James and Beryl Reid. The accident of studio driver who loses the their last can of the film has to go to find the extras who were in the film to complete the reel. A film of searching that brings on stress but some good comedy, drama and tragedy as well as a good film go for people who make mistakes.in life.
