Hazell says herself in the liner notes (terrible font and very small!) that this LP was never meant to be released, but was for radio stations to use to pad out their programming with songs they didn't have to pay so much for in royalties. She was told she had to sing them 'straight' with no vocal gymnastics, which makes the finished result a little bland in places. Knowing how Hazell's wonderful voice could have soared with such perfect songs is a little frustrating, but as the listener, one has to put this thought aside and listen to the CD for what it is. Once you get past this, it's actually a very sweet collection of Bacharach and David songs done by this HI-NRG diva in the days when she was more of a session singer and trying to build up her own name in the business.

There are times during the listening process where you can hear echoes of the mistress of B&D songs herself, Dionne Warwick, coming through and other times when she's definitely more Cilla Black. This is no bad thing, because there's also enough of Hazell coming through, although it takes a little while to get used to the twee sound she makes with her voice. The addition of a not-so-well-known track "To wait for love" makes this CD stand out for me. It's a beautiful track and interpreted well.

All in all, I enjoyed this CD. I'm a bit of a completist and as I love Hazell's voice, I had to have this. She won't ever overtake Miss Dionne for me when it comes to interpreting Bacharach and David songs, but it's a very pleasant listen and - no offence intended Hazell - perfect background music......which in fact, is what it was always intended to be.

A nicely packed re-release of an early promotional album of Bacharach & David songs recorded by Hazell Dean.
Cherry Red have done an amazing job with the restoring of this recording (taken from Hazell's personal copy LP) and with pulling together all the previously unseen photos and artist information found this the deluxe booklet

A great addition to the collect for any Hazell Dean or fans of Bacharach & David songs

Very Retro in a kind of nostalgic / different way.
This album has tones that reach back to an early 70's vibe, i found the instruments / percussion / arrangement grow on you.
Hazel sings all the period classics with a youthful panache and her voice brings a very different feel to these loved songs.
I personally love this recording.

Great to finally get this amazing album released in 2014. All the songs suit Hazell's voice perfectly. The booklet is awesome too. Well done Cherry Red for releasing this gem. Highly recommended! :-)

Disappointed, Hazell does not deliver on any of these early tracks. Compare similar with Dusty Springfield or Dionne Warwick and you are talking. This really didn't suit Hazell's talent.

Maybe not the first album I choose to put in my sound system, but an essential part of my HD Collection.

The main reason for purchase for most people will be a chance to hear these rare early recordings from Hazell Dean, which were never released commercially first time around. By its nature, being recorded for padding out BBC local radio airtime, the content of the album is not unique or groundbreaking.

That said, this is still very enjoyable. Hazell sings all the songs beautifully, and whilst the arrangements are perhaps a little like lift music, they are highly competent and enjoyable. Inevitably, more famous renditions of each of these songs come to mind when listening. As noted in the booklet, Hazell had to sing these very straight and plain, so they are naturally always in the shadows of the better known recordings.

Despite that, it should be enjoyed by those who aren't coming to this from a Hazell Dean collectors' perspective.

Remastered from Hazell's own vinyl copy, the sound quality is superb, and the informative booklet most interesting. It's great to be able to own on CD this early chapter of Hazell's career, and a superb companion to the recent reissues of Hazell's other albums. Completely charming and quite unlike any other Hazell Dean CD.
