The concept is pretty simple, all of Shawn Michaels Wrestlemania matches (except one, we'll get to that) in one place, in high def, with new material from the man himself to give some insight into the matches.
The matches themselves are quality, ranging from decent matches at worst all the way up to some of the greatest matches in the history of the WWF (or WWE if you insist). Yes they've all been released before on various discs but having them all in one box in the best format is a selling point.
The other main selling point is the brand new interview with Michaels which has been cut down into smaller chunks and is used as introductions to the matches. Sometimes Shawn talks about what went into the matches themselves, sometimes its more in general about his position in the company at the time. There's very good stuff here and he's got interesting comments to make on many subjects including on the split of The Rockers tag team, Hulk Hogans return at WM9, celebrities in wrestling, Scott Hall, Steve Austin, Ric Flairs "retirement" and Shawns own comeback from a four year hiatus.
The Blu Ray extras are good while they last but theres not many of them. They feature a few vintage promos from early Wrestlemania's, a few more comments from Shawn that didn't fit into the main parts of the Blu Ray and some interesting behind the scenes footage. That's about it though, they run to just 20 minutes in total.
Overall though an excellent package and well worth a purchase or at least a viewing. For those that are interested I'll run through the list of matches below with my brief thoughts for what they're worth. It's worth noting at this point that one match is of course missing from the package. Michaels triple threat match with Triple H and Chris Benoit from Wrestlemania 20 has not been included. Most will know the reasons why (try searching the net under "Chris Benoit" if you don't). Some will agree with the exclusion, some wont but it is what it is sadly.
WM5 - The Rockers v The Twin Towers - A good short tag match which did its job.
WM6 - The Rockers v Orient Express - An ok match but nowhere hear the longer one they would have at Royal Rumble 91. Has a terrible finish as well.
WM7 - The Rockers v Haku and The Barbarian - A good old school clash of styles match. Exactly what you need from a PPV opener.
WM8 - Shawn v El Matador - A standard singles match, Shawn just finding his feet as a heel at this point. The new cocky character along with companion Sherri are a riot though.
WM9 - Shawn v Tatanka - I've never been a fan of Tatanka and this is probably the weakest match on the package. Kind of sums up the worst ever Wrestlemania when even Mr Wrestlemania cant get it going.
WM10 - Shawn v Razor Ramon ladder match - What more is there to say about this one? Absolute classic.
WM11 - Shawn v Diesel - Underrated match for the world title. Shawn carries the load here and takes Diesel to a quality encounter.
WM12 - Shawn v Bret Hart Iron Man match - This one goes an hour and beyond. Some love it, some don't. I fall somewhere in the middle, a good match but not as good as I wanted it to be.
WM14 - Shawn v Steve Austin - Due to Shawns back injury this never hit the heights it could have. Still a decent match though.
WM19 - Shawn v Chris Jericho - One of my favourites to be honest. Cracking match which stole the show.
WM21 - Shawn v Kurt Angle - Fantastic match, exactly the kind of wrestling match you would expect from these two.
WM22 - Shawn v Vince Mcmahon - This is essentially just Shawn beating up an old man for 20 minutes. Still oddly compelling though.
WM23 - Shawn v John Cena - One of Cena's best ever matches (its a short list). He works well with Shawn but who doesn't?
WM24 - Shawn v Ric Flair - Great match with a fantastic story. Flairs best match in 10 years.
WM25 - Shawn v Undertaker - One of the WWF/WWE's greatest ever matches.
WM26 - Shawn v Undertaker - Not as good as the previous year but still superb. Perfect storytelling.
There have been a number of Shawn Michaels dvds in the last few years, but as we approach the 30th anniversary of Wrestlemania, here's a dvd with the entire catalogue of Shawn Michaels matches from the annual WWE spectacular, the event that Michaels made his name at. It's easy to see why they picked Shawn Michaels as the feature superstar as there are some absolute classic matches included here:
All matches are:
Wrestlemania 5 - The Rockers vs Twin Towers (Akeem and Big Boss Man) from when Shawn teamed up with Marty Jannety early in his WWE career. Not the best of starts for the dvd here, than goodness you can press 'skip'
Wrestlemania 6 - The Rockers vs Orient Express.
Wrestlemania 7 - The Rockers vs Haku and Barbarian.
Wrestlemania 8 - Shawn Michaels vs Tito Santana - Shawn is now the sexy boy HBK, playing the cocky arrogant heel which really made his name in the WWE
Wrestlemania 9 - Shawn Michaels vs Tatanka - a forgettable encounter - go on, can YOU remember what happens?
Wrestlemania 10 - Shawn Michaels vs Razor Ramon - ladder match - the one that will feature everytime, an absolute classic that's unbelievably 20 years ago
Wrestlemania 11 - Shawn Michaels vs Diesel - The former bodyguard for HBK is the WWE champion in one of the poorest years for WWE, and on this disc alone so far the win loss record for Shawn is a tad embarrassing
Wrestlemania 12 - Shawn Michaels vs Bret Hart - Shawn takes on the man who would become his number one enemy in an hour long Iron Man match. This is the one that starts to cement his Wrestlemania monicker, but if you know the outcome then you may not want to sit through an hour match
Wrestlemania 14 - Shawn Michaels vs Stone Cold Steve Austin - the final match for a few years for the once again heel HBK in his first D-Generation X guise. Iron Mike Tyson sends Shawn on his way for the next 5 years.
Wrestlemania 19 - Shawn Michaels vs Chris Jericho - Shawn is back and against one of the big stars of the new millennium, a classic encounter
Wrestlemania 21 - Shawn Michaels vs Kurt Angle - possibly the best match on the whole disc, I actually prefer Angle more than HBK
Wrestlemania 22 - Shawn Michaels vs Mr McMahon - No Holds Barred - definitley a mix of good vs evil here
Wrestlemania 23 - Shawn Michaels vs John Cena
Wrestlemania 24 - Shawn Michaels vs Ric Flair - Shawn brings out the best of the nature boy in his wwe retirement bout - emotional at the time
Wrestlemania 25 - Shawn Michaels vs Undertaker - Not sure anyone expected this match to be as good as it was but is regarded as one of the best Mania matches in history - needs to be seen if you've never seen it before.
Wrestlemania 26 - Shawn Michaels vs Undertaker - HBKs final WWE match and a retread of the classic from the previous year which, though not just as good, is still a great match for two veterans.
So, to sum up, if you've got any of these on other dvds you may not feel the need to buy this, but there are certainly a handful of classics that rank as some of the best matches in the entire WWE history and prove that Shawn Michaels deserves to be called Mr Wrestlemania
on 22 March 2014
As my headline puts it Wrestlemania just isnt the same without Shawn Michaels, Undertaker may have "The Streak" at Wrestlemania but how many of those 21 matches can you really say were great matches or ones to remember? A large majority of HBK matches at Wrestlemania are simply instant classics.
A great collection of matches, of course its missing that Triple Threat Match at Wrestlemania 20 with HBK vs Triple H vs Chris Benoit but if you want to watch that im sure that match is on youtube somewhere, and Shawn Michaels one on one Wrestlemania matches are better in my honest opinion.
Its great to see some insight before the matches by Shawn Michaels, if you already have the 2 Shawn Michaels DVD's (Heartbreak and Triumph, My Journey) you will definitely need to add this to your collection.
