It could have been better
on 9 March 2012
I was really looking forward to hearing this album. There is no doubt that Emeli has a great voice, and she can tackle both ballads and up tempo songs with ease. The album starts well with Heaven and My Kind of Love, but before long, slow song after slow song becomes too much until I was almost screaming to hear something with a bit more of a beat to it. Daddy is my favourite track on the album, but feels as if it's been put there just to break up the monotony before we move into another batch of slow numbers. The production on the ballads is also very sparse, and although some of them are very moving, to me, they sound a bit unfinished, like they are almost demo tracks. Once again Next To Me, a great track, saves the day, and awakens me from my slumber, before I nod off back to sleep as we move back into another set of slow numbers.
Don't get me wrong I still love a great deal of her music, and if only "Our Version of Events" had perhaps 3 more up tempo songs, and 3 less ballads, this album would have been great, and I'm sure I would have been giving it 5 stars too. I think the reason I'm disappointed is that having loved "Heaven", "Daddy" and "Next To Me", it's a bit of a shock to hear that the majority of the rest of the album is nothing like her single releases.
