Unreliable and lacks functions you would get in other products
on 7 February 2014
I would really expect more from Apple but I have kept buying these devices purely because there is no longer much choice for MP3 players any more and this one is the smallest I can find for the gym. The limited functionality is also a let down. I had a tiny IRiver music device which had every function you could think of, including playing back a selection of tracks which you can not do with the Shuffle. All you get is play, stop, next and previous track with the shuffle. Unlike the IRiver, there is also no built in radio but I can live with this. Also, why only a 2gb version? The clip on is great though on the shuffle as I can attach it to my t-shirt when jogging. It is also light and is rechargeable and the battery life is good. Head sets are the usual nothing special which Apple and I believe their new models are better now. The biggest issue is others can also hear you're music.
I have gone through about four of these devices over the years. I have three I use now at the gym, that's right, three. They all have exactly the same issue. They all have a mind of their own and work some of the time but not all the time. They device is fully charged. I confirm this by double clicking the button and the voice activation tells me this. If I leave it for a few hours, it then starts to work again but not always. Sometimes I need to charge it more and then it works but there is no solution I can work out. You can imagine how frustrating it is to have a fully charged device though, go to the gym and it does not work. A member of my family also has exactly the same problem.
I walked into the Apple Store the other day and they have advised me to go bring in all my shuffles so they can investigate. I will bring all four devices with me. All have exactly the same problem. I will let you know what they say, but frankly, I was expecting so much more from Apple. This company has more money than the U.S. government so there is no excuse to sell such rubbish quality. Also, some of these devices are fourth gen so I am very interested in what they are going to say and will keep you posted.
Final note. I've looked at some other reviews here to see if anyone else has the same problem and it sounds like others do but are chucking the item away. If you have the same issue as me in that it does not power on, please do not do this. It will work again and is probably just unreliable. It is astonishing though that Apple can not make something as simple as an MP3 player though that works reliably but then again, they are made in China like everything else today so maybe my expectation of the Apple brand was too high.
