A six disc set which picks certain specific topics from the American Civil War. A few battles analyzed, one episode on undercover raids, one on development of ordnance and a history of Sherman's March. This set is not a history of the Civil War,as such and not recommended for someone expecting a start-to-finish overview history. Interesting, well presented topics for "buffs" and thus well worth purchasing.

This is a very well put together documentary and will appeal to historians and military buffs as it informs of the technology advances and industrialisation of war. i.e. American Civil War is the first Industrial War.
Dealing with forensic evidence that changes the view of certain myths and battles of the civil war such as the Hornets Nest.

Enthralling for those interested in strategy and tactics rather than just the overall narrative and 'a must' for weaponary information. The dramatisation is well done though concerned with details of battles and the characters involved in particular events, such as the generals and the forensic view of the locations, rather than the emphasis being on the historical and political overview alone.
Very concise and 'a must' for those interested in the people 'on the ground' and effects and process of technology used to destroy people in wars.

This THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR 6 DVD Box Set is not and should not be confused with the highly-acclaimed but expensive THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR - a film by Ken Burns. This is the 2010 version released by HISTORY CHANNEL

Disc 1: THE MOST DARING MISSION of the Civil War and APRIL 1865.
Disc 2: THE BATTLEFIELD DETECTIVES ANTIETAM and SHILOH.
Disc 3: SECRET MISSIONS and THE LOST BATTLE of the Civil War.
Disc 4: TALES OF THE GUNS of the Civil War and EIGHTY ACRES OF HELL.
Disc 5: SHERMAN'S MARCH Plus SPECIAL FEATURES.
Disc 6: CIVIL WAR COMBAT Shiloh, Antietam, Gettysburg & Cold Harbor.

This is not a complete history of the American Civil War but nevertheless has many interesting new stories and re-enactments from U S Grant's symbolic gesture of doffing his hat to Robert E Lee as he left Appomattox after the surrender to a Union Prison for Confederates near Chicago which seemed to almost match the more well-known Southern Prison for Union Troops at Andersonville, Georgia.
The Civil War is often referred to as the first "modern" war in history, included armaments, ironclad ships, telegraph and railroads. The casualty list on both sides for four years of fighting was truly appalling, much of which is reflected here.
Disc Five is devoted entirely William T Sherman's epic "march to the sea", which is extremely well done and is worth the entire box-set price on its own!
Much of the material here is in standard 4:3 aspect whilst the rest is in wide-screen format. Over fourteen hours of viewing here for very little money, you just can't go wrong!

This set offers a great insight into varied aspects of the american civil war which will appeal to civil war buffs and those who are becoming interested in the subject. In particular the DVD on Sherman's march to the sea is excellent and very well produced explains this campaign accurately rather than focusing on the myths that have been allowed to become accepted facts. For the price you will not get a better set other than the Ken Burns production.

While the History Channel approaches the Civil War in a different way to Ken and Ric Burns, its insights are fascinating.I bet many Americans have never heard of the ironclad Albermarle for instance or the kidnapping of a Union general by a small force of Confederates in 1863.It also shows the courage and resourcefulness of quite ordinary men and women who endured in spite of everything. But no mention of Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forest ?

A series of interesting programs that supplement your knowledge of the subject. If, for example, you know nothing about Antietam - the program won't help at all and if you know a lot, then the program won't help much either! There's a lot of recapping after what would be the advertisement breaks which is a bit tedious - very tedious but apart from that I thought they were a good effort and worth the price - which is not a lot!

I gave this set to our Civil War re-enactment buff for his birthday, and he was delighted with it.
He was amazed that there was so much he had not seen before, particularly the battlefield walks, and the armament reviews ... and as he is his company's gunner, that's saying something!
The series was made by the Discovery Channel, so if you missed it (or want to see it again) do buy it, it's only a pound a disc!
Nice to be able to please a chap now and again ... and again ... and again ...!

One of those television series that come along once in a generation. The documentary by Ken Burns has had so many awards, a few words from me seem almost superfluous. This is not like the usual historical account of past events: this is almost like being there.

The words, the music, the interviews are all strung masterfully together to tell the story of the most traumatic of all wars: the ones fought between brothers, cousins and neighbours.

Could watch it over and over. Graham Guille

For any one who (like me) has a fondness for America and it's history this 6 dvd box set is excellent value for me money. It is a wonderful history lesson and tells of some of the historical facts of some of the darkest and bloodiest days in the American history where they had the North against South, Brother against Brother. And it also therefore helps to shed some light on the war that played a major part in shaping the America that we know today. In my humble opinion it's not to be missed.
