Well, the BBC did it with the updated Dr. Who and now they've gone and done it again. This is a terrific show and a wonderful update on the old 'cops on the box' action drama.
The basic premise is intriguing - is the hero in a coma, back in time, crazy - but it's the 1970s feel that gives it the biggest kick, and that's especially down to the big shoes filled by Gene Hunt. What a wonderful creation. A man so desperately wrong, in so many ways, yet a man who's basic instincts are often so right -- to get the scum off the streets at any cost. This is a fantastic book. But then so are many others. So what sets this head and shoulders above the thousands of other thrillers out there? It's just such a well-written and intelligent story involving such fascinating characters.

From page 1 you're drawn into an intriguing world and surrounded by a wealth of characters that are each drawn with such depth you can't help but care about them - you even get to understand and even like the bad guys! In fact you're drawn in so much that though you see the story unfolding from many people's perspectives you never feel lost, you always know just what's going on. In fact, the number of different points of view adds to the enjoyment… Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars A real surprise!, 1 Nov 2006
I don't like Harry Potter - movies, books, lunchpails... you name it. I mean, I'm a guy. I like beer, sports, action movies with sex, violence and car chases... So, well, er... it's kinda difficult admitting I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and have awarded it 4 stars! But it deserves it.

I only agreed to watch it because my partner wanted to. Despite her age, she loves the books, so the movies were a must-see. The books are way too childish for me. As were the first movies. But with this one, the franchise seems to have come of age. It's much darker, the atmosphere, the themes, the plot. The actors are more accomplished - I no longer yearn to slap that Hermione, as I did in her… Read more
