When a film starts out with the male lead saying that in order for a woman to be desirable to men, she must be willing to hang on his every word, allow him to have total control of the relationship, and offer lots and lots of kinky sex, you don't really expect that the next hour and a half will be spent demonstrating that this is absolutely true. Yet this is precisely what happens in The Ugly Truth.

There are very few television shows that I follow avidly, and before I watched this, I wasn't sure that it would be one of them. I was thankfully entirely wrong - I was hooked before the first episode had even finished, and after that I faithfully tuned in every week.

It might be impossible to figure out exactly how Pushing Daisies works so well, but it certainly does. It is a wonderful concoction of opposites - the touching moments run parallel with the laugh-out-loud funny ones, and it is at once quirkily dark and relentlessly upbeat, ridiculously silly and incredibly clever. I found with Final Straw and with Eyes Open that I liked only a couple of songs immediately. The rest grew on me as I continued to listen, until I wondered how I could ever have not liked them. Perhaps because it's Snow Patrol that really got me into the alternative rock genre and my taste in music has changed a lot since I first heard their previous albums, I found that I loved A Hundred Million Suns much more quickly than I did the previous two.
