Under the Wire by Paul Conroy

I read this book in one sitting. In some ways it's like thriller. The adventure was terrifying and the outcome tragic, but somehow the author's sense of humour shines through. Paul Conroy is a very funny man, as well as a brave one. It's an extraordinary chronicle of a terrifying journey into war, and a heartfelt tribute to the great war correspondent, Marie Colvin.

I found Rock Creek Park unputdownable... the characters are well drawn, and the plot gripping. The sci-fi element is original, distinguishing the book from other thrillers. It should be a made into a movie.

The plot of The Road to Urbino keeps you reading, the ideas set you thinking, and the atmosphere stays with you. I found the characters sensitively drawn - no heroes nor villains, but real people with a strong physical presence. It's about colour and light and the power of painting, as much as about selfishness and love. The story of Sri Lanka is woven in, but the book is never polemical. Rather, it shows how history can meld with art in the life of an individual, and the meaning they - and you - can draw.
