The best British Isles film since Dead Man's Shoes. And like the aforementioned masterpiece, this is powerful drama with disturbing violence aided by natural ad-lib dialogue and 'everyday' characters, making it all the more convincing, real and in-your-face a portrayal of otherwise normal (or not) human beings who are also gangsters.

It rivals The Sopranos on that point, its strength being its ability to make the viewer sometimes empathise with the characters' familiar everyday problems, even though we know they are paranoid-psychotic sociopaths. It also has that series' charm and brutally graphic elements.

I'm a big fan of crime/gangster films, especially gritty British Isles films. But this is a very poor film, with an awful script and storyline, awful direction, awful editing - and awful acting as a consequence.
Actors spend more time standing around undirected as they wait for their lines. There are long, still silences that exasperates an already slow film. I suffered an hour before switching off, and I can't remember the last time I did that (and I'm 43 yrs old).
I feel sorry for all involved, and only hope they learn from experience and have another pop at making a better film. At least it can't be any worse than this.

Whatever the politics and/or truth of historical background, the film's failure is its lame direction, at times poor editing, and a very, very bad script that also tries to bridge the gaps in the poor editing of a ridiculously unlikely storyline. Despite some nice CGI and some great action scenes the film is dissapointing, formulaic and unoriginal.
