The day before I heard this album for the first time I was struck by the 10/10 review on my favourite music site Line of Best Fit (which is no mean feat I may add). I had already been looking forward to the record, but that review pushed my expectations to dizzying heights. I'm happy to report that I wasn't disappointed!

As with many 4th albums, I feel 'Present Tense' very much condenses all the separate elements of the band's entire discography into a potent, polished whole. Metropolis: The Chase Suite [Special Edition] ~ Janelle Mone
This is Monáe's first EP, and as with all her material it is well worth diving into. Personally I don't find it quite as exciting as her LPs, but that has as much to do with length as it does quality. 'Many Moons' is a great track. The Cyndi Mayweather narrative is much clearer on 'Chase' than on the full albums, and is worth it for that backstory alone I think.

Whilst we haven't even seen 1/12 of what 2014 has to offer when I write this, I would be very surprised if this does not make my top 10 in the year end list. Heck, if it didn't then we would have had one of the best musical years in living memory!

There are all kinds of influences at play here. Structurally the album reminds me of Bowie and Eno's late 70's work with it's mix of ambient and poppier tracks, but I can also hear flavours of Kraftwerk in there. This certainly isn't a 70's album though; it feels very much like an album that could only exist in the last few years.

I don't usually do a track by track, but this warrants it.
