My disappointment was heightened by the great expectations i had of Iain M. Banks. This is the first tine I'd read a Banks novel. Maybe he's better without the M, when he might not feel the need to slow the plot to a standstill with descriptions of the politics and history of his world along with detailed thoughts of the characters all the time. Sure these are important, but show me don't tell me. Let me read between the lines a little. I kept hoping it gets better. But alas, the end brought my disastifaction to its crescendo. I can't recommend this book. Maybe his later works are better.
