I Know Where I am When I'm Falling by Amanda Holmes

This book tells an unusual and difficult story and does so in a style which elegant, readable and warm. The writer creates a whole world which is utterly believable. The central relationship which lies at the heart of the book is puzzling, challenging and sad. It is a real tribute to the writer that she doesn't shy away from the complexity of the situation she unravels. The book asks complicated questions about why love and goodness sometimes just aren't enough and why we sometimes fail to see those things which are right in front of us. I definitely recommend this book and am waiting for the next one.

This one of the best books I have read in a long time. It taught me so much that I didn't know about Germany and England through two World Wars. Having read this book I feel that I understand much more about why many people in Germany supported Hitler. The book is not only a fascinating story of ordinary lives disrupted by the great events of history, it is also beautifully written. The writer's account of the Hitler Youth is particularly candid and fascinating and shows that whole period of history in a new light. I was also amazed and moved by the author's courage and the courage of all her family. The book serves of as a reminder of the tenacity of the human spirit and how… Read more
