Alice Bliss is a fifteen year old living in upstate New York whose father, an army reservist, is called up to serve in Iraq. Alice is a Daddy's girl used to following him around his workshop and helping him chop wood, grow vegetables and mend roofs and she will miss him terribly. We see Alice as her family adjusts to life without Dad, trying to fill the void in her mother's life and maintain a sense of normality for her little sister Ellie.

The book is beautifully written and steadily paced. Alice is at a difficult age, finding her own interests in life and changing feelings towards the boy next door, Henry. I found Harrington's portrayal of teenage angst to be so realistic… Read more

This is a wonderful saga of a novel taking the reader on a world tour from India to Yemen to New York but most of all Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. It begins with the birth of the main protagonist, Marion, and his twin brother, Shiva, as their mother, a nun, suffers a long and horrific labour. The twins' father, a surgeon, flees the scene leaving the boys to be raised by doctors Hema and Ghosh. The first part of the book sets the scene and introduces the many characters and manages to drag out the birth scene to over 100 pages when the real-time event was actually a panicky, emergency situation over in 20 minutes. This is one of my favourite books. I first read it back in 2002 and found it a strange and unusual book but the story has always stayed with me. Ten years later, I'm a more discerning reader and like my books to be challenging and a little off the beaten track so this one has come up fresh for me.

It is set in the Vice President's mansion in an unstable South American country.
