I was very impressed by this novel, the first one I have read by Peter May. The characters are rounded and entirely convincing and the plot enthralling. The real focus of the book is the island itself: its traditions, its weather, its history and its landscape, and how all of these affect for better or worse those who live there. I enjoyed The Blackhouse so much that I purchased the rest of the trilogy and would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in crime fiction which is well-written and atmospheric.
I often look for the Kindle bargains as I have been pleasantly surprised to find many good books amongst them, but this is one that will have to go down as a waste of my 99p. From the outset the writing failed to convince. Even a poor plot can sometimes be redeemed by a good written style or convincingly-drawn characters but this has neither a credible story nor any literary merit. It joins the small handful of novels I have been unable to finish. Not recommended.
We thought this was the best cat flap we had ever purchased (and we have owned cats for over 40 years) because it is quiet and well insulated, also big enough to cope with a Maine Coon. All was fine until this week when one of the magnets just fell out. We tried gluing it back in but although OK at first, as soon as the flap is used the other magnet pulls it out of its housing again. Although only a few months since purchase (fitted at the beginning of this summer), the seller refuses to consider replacing it, arguing that we have caused the damage, so this was not such a good deal after all.
