Voyage To Desolation Land by Jean-Paul Kauffmann
Voyage To Desolation Land by Jean-Paul Kauffmann
I bought 'Voyage to Desolation Island' because I visited the Kerguelen Islands a few years ago and a visitor to my website recommended the book to me.
The islands seem to captivate some people, even those who've never been there, and Jean-Paul Kauffman had obviously been fascinated for some time before his visit. His descriptions of the landscapes and weather are fantastic, taking me right back to my own time out in the field there. He's not so good when it comes to describing the social life on the base at Port aux Francais.
The translation to English is generally very good, only slipping up on some technical and specialist terms. Unfortunately some idiot at the publishing… Read more
Sony DSC-P51 Digital Camera [2.0MP 2xOptical] by Sony

I bought this camera mainly because it was well discounted and I already have other devices that use memory sticks. I'm very happy with the results, the pictures are clear and the auto-exposure works well.
The 16MB memory stick supplied with it is a bit small and the supplied battery charger is incredibly slow, so budget for a fast NiMH charger and a bigger memory stick if you're going to buy one.
A major advantage is that Sony (for once) went for standards-compliance when designing the camera. When you plug it into your PC it shows up as a USB hard disk. This means you can use it as a generic memory stick reader and also that it works with any operating system that supports… Read more
Route Europe by Palmtop
Route Europe by Palmtop

I'll start by saying that I like this package and found it useful on a road trip across Europe last year. The user interface is fairly clear and the speed of route finding is good, considering the processor speed and memory limitations.
One fault is that you can't plan routes beginning in one country and ending in another, each country database is completely separate. I ended up using a paper road atlas to identify a suitable border crossing and then using that as an intermediate stage.
The other flaw is that the roads included seem a bit random at times. For example the UK database contains some B-class roads but misses out several A-class roads and the towns on them.
