This is a superb book and I greatly enjoyed it. Simple souls looking for a coffee-table ornament may be disappointed - though I also liked the mgnificent cover - but readers who want to know how the great princely courts actually worked and changed over time will find this an absorbing book. Almost all the major courts of Europe are covered, though one might have wished for more on the Scandinavian and Eastern courts. A chapter on the Ottoman court at Constantinople would have been a welcome addition. But there are chapters on London, Madrid, Rome, Versailles, Munich, Turin, Berlin, Stockholm and St Petersburg, each covering the period between 1500 and 1700, enabling the reader to… Read more
