The Electric Lady ~ Janelle MonŠe
The Electric Lady ~ Janelle MonŠe
Having thoroughly enjoyed Archandroid I eagerly anticipated this follow-up. Electric Lady does not have the immediate impact of Archandroid. It is a lot less quirky, and possibly, less fun. Stylistically Archandroid was all over the place (this is no criticism), but Electric Lady is more focused on the R&B sound. Once again the songs are beautifully crafted and produced and are performed to perfection by stellar musicians. Janelle Monae's voice shines out, what a talent she has. These songs work their way into your head, and you realise how outstandingly good this album is after a few listens (a few more than it took to appreciate Archandroid). Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy by Helen Fielding

I felt like it took more effort to read this book than it took Helen Fielding to write it. A dreadful bit of writing in which lazily-written, unbelievable and unfunny set-pieces are linked by lengthy and even-more-lazily-written strings of text messages or twitter posts. I got the distinct feeling Helen Fielding has written this as a screenplay, and I guess Sally Philips and Colin Firth were not available, or had the sense to say no, hence their characters' absence from the book.

Having enjoyed the earlier books and the films (and thought Renee Zellweger was excellent BTW) this book is lamentable by comparison.

The other reviewers are right, this is an astonishingly good album. Beautifully crafted songs in diverse styles, performed to near-perfection. The quality is outstanding, but this album does not disappoint on quantity either, with 18 tracks spanning 69 minutes. One minor criticism in the name of a balanced review, is that Janelle Monae does occasionally indulge in some over-singing.
