Black Sabbath ~ Black Sabbath

This reissue of Black Sabbath's first album has the vanilla version of the album on the first CD and some outtakes and alternative versions as well as a single B-side on the second CD. None of the versions are markedly different from the album versions. The sound quality is excellent. However Black Sabbath is available for 3.98 with the B-side as an extra track, making this edition, with a skimpy playing time of 84:25, an option for completists only.

3.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment, 5 Aug 2008
The release of this DVD was delayed again and again until it finally went on sale yesterday. You would expect something special then, but it's just a concert with zero extras and plain Dolby Digital Stereo sound - no surround. The cover touts this as a "Special Edition High Definition DVD". Frankly for this kind of concert with a psychedelic lightshow I doubt if it would make a difference. The picture is blurred in many sequences because of the lighting. I'm a Hawkwind fan and collector, so for me this is a necessary purchase. If you're looking for an introduction to Hawkwind with better sound I suggest you try Hawkwind - in ConcertRead more

1. The soundtrack is in mono even though it is stated as stereo on the back cover. The beautiful Hans Zimmer score and the great disco music loose all of their impact.

2. The video transfer is reasonable, but not anamorphic.

An inquiry at the publishing company produced the answer that I was wrong about the soundtrack and that it was impossible to make an anamorphic 1.66:1 transfer without cropping the picture (!). An appalling lack of knowledge (the mother company I got the answer from was SONY). I watched the DVD with headphones on and the… Read more
