I really liked the book, it was just what I needed: crime, not too gruelling, in description at least. Not too many characters, though I tended to get a bit confused but then I easily do. However, the ending was very disappointing. I had expected, and needed, a clearer explantation of the whole sorry story. Pity about an otherwise good book.

Picked it up in the library as I had positive memories of reading her, way back when. Blimey! The vague - fashionable? - unconvincing cardboard sex-talk put me off. Superficial, artificial conversation. Sorry, I did not persist. I read for pleasure or information, not to be annoyed. Strange for a 'good' author to write such an unconvincing book.

I had liked 'Ode to Joy', but was not keen on this book. You have to be very interested in the subject - life in Israel in the last century - to appreciate it as it is. For the rest of us it would have benefited from a lot of editing, nor was the writing was not quite good enough for a five-star accolade. Sorry Shifra!
